Family Practitioners Are the Most Targeted Physicians by Email, but Specialists Are More Likely to Open and Click

Results from SK&A’s Email Performance Archive show sent, open and click-through trends from email campaigns

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/31/2011 -- SK&A, A Cegedim Company, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions and research, today announced results from the second half of 2010 for its Email Performance Archive (EPA), a web resource that tracks campaign trends from emails deployed by SK&A on behalf of its healthcare clients. According to the results, family practitioners are consistently the most emailed physicians; however, specialty physicians are more likely to open emails and click to landing pages.

“The Email Performance Archive provides a valuable baseline for email campaign activity targeting physicians, mid-level practitioners and other healthcare business professionals,” said Dave Escalante, Vice President & General Manager, SK&A and OneKey.

“With over 4.8 million emails deployed for our clients, SK&A is the leader in email campaign segmentation, targeting, delivery, reporting and management. Viewing the trends by campaign type, specialty, job title and other metrics is useful for understanding the nuances of utilizing the e-marketing channel. This information is just a click away on the SK&A website.”

Throughout 2010, family practitioners were the most emailed physicians, with an average of 17 percent of all emails targeting them.

The EPA, however, shows that physicians in specialized areas of medicine were more likely to open and click through emails rather than family and other general practitioners.

EPA results show that the three highest open rates were from trauma surgeons (13.4 percent), hepatologists (13.2 percent) and dermatopathologists (11.1 percent). Preventative medicine specialists (3.4 percent), bariatricians (3.2 percent) and sleep medicine specialists (2.3 percent) had the three highest click-through rates. Pediatric specialists also responded well to emails, with physicians in the areas of pediatric radiology, child neurology, pediatric surgery, pediatric pulmonology, pediatric cardiology, and neonatology ranking in the top 15 for open and click-through rates. Family practitioners, general practitioners and internists, on the other hand, did not make the top 15 for open and click-through rates, indicating that a more targeted audience approach may be necessary for responsiveness to emails.

Overall email deployment results show, overwhelmingly, that the most sent campaign type was product or service announcement (71.8 percent), which shot up from 57.3 percent of emails sent in the second quarter of 2010. Surveys remained in the top three email types deployed at 6.9 percent of email campaigns. Continuing Medical Education web invitations have steadily dropped in popularity since the first quarter of 2010, declining from 11.1 percent to 9.3 percent to 2.9 percent of emails sent.

SK&A introduced the EPA in May 2010, giving readers a first-hand look at email campaign results across targeting, campaign type, and actual performance dimensions. SK&A’s email addresses are telephone-verified twice per year and permission passed four times per year. These email addresses drive an average of 90 email campaigns per month to over 405,000 healthcare professionals.

Adoption of EHRs in Medical Offices Owned by Hospitals and Health Systems Jumps 10 Percent

Ongoing Survey by SK&A Reveals Earliest Adopters and Other Insights

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/28/2010 -- Medical offices owned by hospitals and health systems are the leaders in adopting electronic healthcare records (EHR) technology, according to the latest results of an ongoing survey released today by SK&A, A Cegedim Company, a leading provider of healthcare information solutions and research.

Results from the biannual survey, “Physician Office Usage of Electronic Healthcare Records Software,” show the greatest jump in adoption rates between January and October 2010 was with medical offices owned by hospitals and health systems.

According to the report, EHR adoption at hospital-owned offices grew from 44.1 percent to 54.9 percent (10.8% increase), and adoption at heath-system-owned offices grew from 50.2 percent to 61.2 percent (11% increase). Overall, U.S. medical office EHR adoption has grown from 36.1 percent to 38.7 percent, a 3 percent increase.

“It’s not surprising healthcare-system and hospital-owned medical offices have the highest adoption rates across the board,” said Proteus Duxbury, a managing consultant with PA Consulting Group, an international management and systems technology consulting firm. “Recently added exceptions to Stark Safe Harbor laws have made it possible for primary care physicians to receive aid from healthcare systems, or use the same EMRs, so they become the early adopters who can take the leap of faith with EMR technology.”

As the 2011 incentive payments for the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009” near, U.S. physicians are steadily beginning to purchase and implement healthcare information technology systems. According to business research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, the rate of EHR adoption among physicians is expected to increase over the next two to five years due to a combination of changes caused by healthcare reform, doubling 2009 EHR market revenues of $1.3 billion to an estimated $2.6 billion in 2012.

SK&A assumed a leading role in measuring medical-office adoption rates of EHR in August 2008 when it officially started the survey targeting every medical office in the U.S. Today, through its comprehensive survey methodology, SK&A offers deep insight for understanding adoption trends, validating the EHR market size and opportunity, and supporting the execution of sales and marketing campaigns.

“The results of the latest survey indicate substantial opportunities for EHR solution providers. Most of the opportunity is associated with small, mid-size, and privately owned practices that have yet to purchase and install EHR systems,” said Dave Escalante, SK&A’s Vice President of Data and Information Solutions. “SK&A’s EHR database is able to identify all the medical offices and physicians in the U.S. that represent a business opportunity for our health IT clients, allowing them to develop sales and marketing strategies and target by geography, specialty, office size, ownership, affiliation and other variables.”

SK&A is actively measuring the EHR brands that have been deployed in medical offices and the types of EHR software functionality being used by physicians in the office. The most commonly used EHR functions are electronic patient notes (28.4%), electronic labs/x-rays (27.3%) and electronic prescribing (25.9%). In addition, SK&A’s survey identifies the medical offices that have not adopted an EHR and is recording their expected timeframes for adoption, the primary factors and decision makers for making EHR purchases, and the awareness of available government incentives.

Other findings of the current report include:

• Physician offices with more exam rooms, more physicians on staff and higher daily patient volumes have the highest EHR adoption rates.
• Physician specialties with the highest adoption rates are radiology (59.9%), pathology (59.8%), aerospace medicine (59.5%), dialysis (59.3%) and emergency medicine (57.6 %).
• Northern (40.9%) and Southern (40.1%) states have the highest rates of adoption.
• The top three leading states for adoption are Minnesota (62.6%), Utah (55.4%) and Wisconsin (52.3%).

SK&A’s report is an ongoing study of U.S. physician offices, featuring EHR adoption data and summarized market research from 213,500 medical offices representing 643,000 physicians. In addition, SK&A is able to identify the IT-purchasing decision makers at the practice- and group-headquarter level who would most likely be responsible for making the EHR-solution decisions.

Ninety Percent of Physicians Are Affiliated With at Least One Hospital, According to New SK&A Survey

SK&A expands database of healthcare provider affiliation information

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/23/2010 -- For marketing, sales and research professionals who need to understand the complex relationship of physician-to-hospital affiliations, SK&A, A Cegedim Company, today announced the release of an enhancement to its Office-Based Physician database that links practicing physicians to hospitals. SK&A has identified 1,143,420 hospital affiliations for the 680,000 physicians in its industry-leading database. Ninety percent of doctors are affiliated with at least one hospital. The average physician is affiliated with 1.7 hospitals.

SK&A enhanced its database of affiliations by surveying more than 235,000 U.S. medical offices over a six-month period to determine the unique connection between physicians and the hospitals within their sphere of practice or specialty. The survey was conducted by SK&A’s Research Center in Irvine, Calif., as part of its daily telephone verification of medical site information.

“Understanding the distinct and multifaceted relationship between physicians and hospitals is absolutely essential to succeed in today’s competitive marketplace,” said Dave Escalante, SK&A’s Vice President of Data and Information Solutions. “SK&A clients, across 12 major U.S. industries, need this important affiliation information to better plan and execute their sales, marketing and market-research programs. High-quality affiliation data enables more effective selling to physicians, supports enhanced targeting and segmentation, and provides more insight into the complex relationships that influence and drive market behaviors,” continued Escalante.

Through this latest delivery, SK&A has expanded its comprehensive, fully telephone-verified database of affiliation information in healthcare. For example, SK&A has identified 320,197 physicians who are affiliated with group practices. Affiliation coverage includes the ability to accurately identify the sites and personnel within:

• Integrated health systems and networks
• Hospital systems and networks, defined by ownership or affiliation
• Group practice networks
• Affiliated nursing homes
• Affiliated healthcare providers, professionals, administrators, executives and office personnel to health systems, hospitals, group practices, and nursing homes.

All of the affiliation information managed by SK&A, including the newly enhanced
physician-to-hospital affiliations and the baseline reference database, is available in Cegedim Dendrite’s OneKey service.

SK&A clients utilize affiliation information to:
• Deliver more accurate online directories of physicians for patient searches
• Understand the influence health systems and hospitals have on their network (e.g. EHR adoption and pharmaceutical sales rep access to physicians in medical offices)
• Enhance coordinated marketing and sales-resource planning and execution
• Accurately define markets and their overall potential.

SK&A Announces Physician Move-Rate Trends

Three-Year Average Shows 15.2 Percent of Specialists Move Each Year

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/11/2010 -- SK&A, A Cegedim Company, today released an update of its “Physicians on the Move” report, which reveals the rate of change of office-based physicians by practice specialty. According to the report, the three-year average of physicians who moved to a new location or practice, retired, or passed away was 15.2 percent. Such changes create obstacles in maintaining quality physician-targeting databases and lists necessary to execute high-performing sales, marketing and market research initiatives.

The move rate of physicians has declined steadily in the three years that SK&A has been producing the report, indicating recent stability among the specialties surveyed. It has gone from 18.2 percent in the 2008 reporting period to 15 percent in 2009 to 12.4 percent in the 2010 period. Allergists / immunologists, pulmonary critical care and internal medicine / pediatrics were the top three practice areas for the most stable physicians, with annual change rates of only 7, 7.1 and 7.9 percent, respectively. Hepatologists, hematologists and osteopathic physicians were among the most volatile doctors, with change rates of 19.9, 19.4 and 19.2 percent, respectively.

Dave Escalante, SK&A Vice President of Data and Information Solutions, offered this perspective: “At a time when the models for physician targeting, segmentation and engagement are rapidly evolving, the need to monitor the actual movement of healthcare practitioners to maintain database integrity has never been more important. Left unmanaged for a two-year period, for example, a physician contact or profiling database would degrade by more than 30 percent, leading to wasted time, money and resources.”

The study, conducted yearly by SK&A’s Research Center, lists 86 physician specialties alphabetically with their annualized change rates for 2008, 2009 and 2010. In addition, 2010 medical office personnel move rates for 16 job titles are listed, with chief executive officers having the most stable move rate of 8.9 percent and receptionists / secretaries having the highest move rate of 22.8 percent.

Physicians Visited by up to 20 Sales Reps Weekly, According to Latest Sk&a Physician Access Study

Nearly half of U.S. physicians require or prefer appointments to be set by pharmaceutical and medical device sales representatives

Irvine, CA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/16/2010 -- According to an updated report released today by SK&A, A Cegedim Company, 98 percent of physicians say their offices are visited by up to 20 sales reps each week from the pharmaceutical or medical device industries, with nearly half of the physicians surveyed saying they require or prefer appointments to be made by reps prior to one-on-one meetings.

These findings are available in SK&A’s latest Physician Access study, an ongoing survey of U.S. medical offices to determine policies for allowing healthcare industry sales-rep access to physicians and other prescribers. SK&A has been measuring industry access to physicians since June 2007. The recent study is based on telephone interviews with 213,616 medical sites representing 632,000 physicians. SK&A surveys its Office-Based Physician database every six months from its Research Center in Irvine, California.

“SK&A’s commitment to measuring sales rep access to physicians has highlighted some very important trends over the years,” said Dave Escalante, SK&A Vice President of Data and Information Solutions. “Over the past year, access to physicians has stabilized overall, indicating there is a right mix of personal and non-personal promotion available to businesses wishing to reach physicians in medical offices. Most important, through SK&A, sales and marketing executives have the data and insight into channel preferences for their physician targets to help build the right multi-channel strategy to ensure business success.”

The percent of physicians who require or prefer appointments has increased significantly in the past year, from 38.5 percent in December 2008 to 49.6 percent in December 2009, according to the survey. The number of physicians who restrict access altogether has remained unchanged in the past 12 months at about 23 percent.

Other significant trends found within the report include:
•	Specialty physicians are less likely to grant sales reps access than general practitioners. The top-three accessible physicians are allergists/immunologists (4.4% no-see rate), diabetes specialists (7%) and gynecologists (7.5%). The least accessible physicians are diagnostic radiologists (91.8% no-see rate), pathologists (91.7%) and neuroradiologists (91.5%).
•	Offices with fewer patients seen daily are less likely to host sales reps. Sites with a daily patient volume of one to 10 have a no-access rate of 28.9 percent and those with a daily patient volume of 31-40 have a 13.6 percent no-access rate.
•	Health system- and hospital-owned offices are less likely to grant sales reps access than offices not part of a health system or owned by a hospital. Health system- and hospital-owned offices have no-access rates of 30.3 percent and 29.5 percent, respectively. Non- health system and hospital-owned offices have no-access rates of 21.5 percent each.
•	Larger practices are less likely to grant sales reps access. Offices with one to two physicians have a no-access rate of 13.4 percent while offices with 10 or more physicians have a no-access rate of 42.1 percent.
•	Physician offices in the Western U.S. are least likely to allow sales reps access. The South had the lowest no-access rate with 19.4 percent, and the West had a 28.2 percent no-access rate.

The Physician Access report is available to help healthcare marketers and sales executives in appointment setting and connecting face-to-face with physicians. Custom reports based on geography, specialty, office size, patient volume and practice ownership are available for sale upon request.
